I would like to start taking pre and post supplements to get the most from my workouts. I would also like to take fat burners. Currently I only have protein shake. I have hypo-thyroid and have to take meds. All the supplement labels say not to take them if you have thyroid issues. I was wondering if their is anyone that is safely taking supplements that have thyroid issues. Thanks

Generally you're fine taking most supplements even if you have hypothyroidism. It might be easier, however, if you list the specific supplements you're interested in, and I can tell you if you can take them or not.

Curious as to your thoughts on the alleged peripheral TH-inhibiting properties of carnitine?

I haven't looked this up in quite a while, and I'm not sure there's any degree of validity to it --> so I'll have to stress my use of the term [alleged], as I'm sure it was something taken out of context. I just figured you might have heard something similar throughout the years.

I'l see if I've got anything archived.

I've seen a few things about Carnitine as a treatment for hyperthyroidism.

Didn't search extensively, but here's a few:

Thyroid. 2000 Dec;10(12):1043-50.
Benvenga S, Lakshmanan M, Trimarchi F.
Carnitine is a naturally occurring inhibitor of thyroid hormone nuclear uptake.

J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2001 Aug;86(8):3579-94.
Benvenga S, Ruggeri RM, Russo A, Lapa D, Campenni A, Trimarchi F.
Usefulness of L-carnitine, a naturally occurring peripheral antagonist of thyroid hormone action, in iatrogenic hyperthyroidism: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Ann N Y Acad Sci. 2004 Nov;1033:158-67.
Benvenga S, Amato A, Calvani M, Trimarchi F.
Effects of carnitine on thyroid hormone action.

I'll check them out later, but already a bit leery that all the citations have the same PI.

No. The prefixes are Latin. Hyper means above, hypo means below. Meaning it's below average
